SUMMARY:Philippine Launch of Culturally Intelligent Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Past Event\n\n Healthcare and Cultural Intelligence \n\n \n Cultural Intelligence at Cedars-Sinai: Decoding the Intersections\n \n\n \n Ned Legaspi joined Cedars-Sinai healthcare and organizational leaders\n for a career development conversation on communication styles\,\n generational shifts\, and cultural intelligence in professional life.\n \n\n \n This became a pivotal engagement in the development of the C3 Bamboo\n Framework. A conversation that began with storytelling widened into a\n larger inquiry about people\, workplaces\, care\, and cross-cultural\n connection.\n \n \n\n \n \n Date\n Tuesday\, October 28\, 2025\n \n\n \n Time\n 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.\n Pacific Time\n \n\n \n Venue\n Harvey Morse Auditorium\n \n Cedars-Sinai Medical Center\, Los Angeles\, California\n \n \n\n \n Program\n Talk of the Hour\n Career Development Program\n \n\n \n Community\n Fil-Am C.A.R.E.S.\n \n Cedars-Sinai Filipino employee resource group\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n The Institution \n\n \n A Conversation Inside a Leading Academic Medical Center\n \n\n \n \n Cedars-Sinai is a nonprofit academic healthcare organization serving\n the diverse Los Angeles community and patients from around the\n world. Its work combines patient care\, medical research\, education\,\n professional development\, and community engagement.\n \n\n \n The scale of the institution made the setting especially\n significant. Cedars-Sinai reports more than 4\,000 nurses\, more than\n 2\,500 physicians on its medical staff\, 915 licensed beds\, and more\n than one million patient encounters annually.\n \n\n \n Within that environment\, the session brought cultural intelligence\n into the realities of care work\, professional relationships\,\n hierarchy\, communication\, and adaptation. Many participants were\n Filipino healthcare professionals\, making the conversation both\n institutional and deeply personal.\n \n \n\n \n \n Visit Cedars-Sinai\n \n\n \n View Rankings\n \n \n \n\n \n Institutional Context \n\n \n #1\n \n Tied for the highest-ranked hospital in California and Los Angeles\n in the 2025-26 U.S. News rankings\n \n \n\n \n 10\n \n Consecutive years on the U.S. News Best Hospitals Honor Roll\n \n \n\n \n 11\n \n Medical specialties nationally ranked in 2025-26\n \n \n\n \n Cedars-Sinai was ranked the #2 hospital in the United States in the\n earlier 2022-23 U.S. News rankings. By the time of this 2025 event\,\n the national overall ranking had shifted to an Honor Roll model.\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n The Session \n\n \n Decoding the Intersections: Communication Styles\, Generational\n Shifts\, and the Context of Cultural Intelligence\n \n\n \n The session explored how cultural expectations influence the way\n healthcare professionals communicate\, respond to authority\, interpret\n behavior\, adapt across generations\, and build trust in the workplace.\n \n \n\n \n \n 01\n Communication Styles\n \n Direct and indirect communication\, high-context and low-context\n meaning\, and the risks of assuming that shared language guarantees\n shared understanding.\n \n \n\n \n 02\n Authority and Relationships\n \n How power distance\, hierarchy\, respect\, collectivism\, and\n relationship expectations can shape teamwork and professional\n interaction.\n \n \n\n \n 03\n Generational Shifts\n \n How changing workplace values and expectations interact with\n culture\, professional identity\, migration\, and the experience of\n adapting across contexts.\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n Talk of the Hour \n\n \n Three Professional Perspectives in One Conversation\n \n\n \n The program connected organizational development\, cultural\n intelligence\, and nursing leadership.\n \n\n \n \n Organizational Development\n Liv Behre\n \n Senior Organizational Development Partner in Learning and\n Organizational Development at Cedars-Sinai.\n \n \n\n \n Cultural Intelligence\n Ned Legaspi\n \n Author\, educator\, speaker\, and Cultural Intelligence Fellow\n exploring how culture shapes communication and connection.\n \n \n\n \n Nursing Leadership\n Peachy Hain\n \n Executive Director of Nursing and advisor to the Fil-Am C.A.R.E.S.\n Employee Resource Group.\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n C3\n \n The Moment the Framework Widened\n \n \n\n \n From Stories to People \n\n \n One Question Changed the Direction of the Work\n \n\n \n \n After the session\, a Filipino nurse described the discussion as\n enlightening\, then asked a practical question: How could these ideas\n be used in everyday professional life\, during shifts\, handovers\,\n team discussions\, and workplace conflict?\n \n\n \n The question moved the conversation from cultural awareness to\n application. It showed that the same forces shaping stories also\n shaped the lives of professionals working across cultures.\n Communication style\, hierarchy\, identity\, relationships\, and trust\n were not abstract concepts. They were present in ordinary workplace\n encounters.\n \n\n \n That realization widened the scope of the emerging C3 Bamboo\n Framework. Stories remained one lens\, but they could no longer be\n the only lens. The framework also needed to examine the people who\n communicate\, work\, care\, lead\, adapt\, and build relationships across\n cultural differences.\n \n \n\n \n Culture shaped the setting. Communication affected the movement of\n meaning. Connection revealed the result.\n The emerging logic of C3\n \n\n \n \n Culture\n \n The values\, identities\, expectations\, and unspoken rules beneath\n the encounter.\n \n \n\n \n Communication\n \n The ways meaning\, authority\, care\, disagreement\, and respect were\n expressed and interpreted.\n \n \n\n \n Connection\n \n The trust\, understanding\, participation\, and relationships that\n emerged from the exchange.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n Acknowledgment \n\n \n An Invitation That Opened a New Direction\n \n\n \n \n The Cedars-Sinai engagement was made possible through the invitation\n and support of Janeth Zafra-Mauricio and the Fil-Am C.A.R.E.S.\n community.\n \n\n \n The session opened a new field of inquiry for Ned's work: how\n culturally grounded frameworks could help professionals navigate\n communication\, hierarchy\, identity\, care\, and trust in institutions\n where people from different backgrounds work together every day.\n \n \n\n \n \n C3 Bamboo Framework\n \n Explore how Culture\, Communication\, and Connection now operate\n across the three lenses of Stories\, People\, and Nations.\n \n \n Explore the Framework\n \n \n\n \n Speaking\n \n View speaking areas involving cross-cultural communication\,\n healthcare\, professional adaptation\, storytelling\, and cultural\n diplomacy.\n \n \n View Speaking Work\n \n \n\n \n C3 Journal\n \n Read the essays\, reflections\, and field notes documenting how the\n framework continues to develop through real encounters.\n \n \n Read the Journal\n \n \n\n \n Events Archive\n \n Browse past and upcoming talks\, conferences\, masterclasses\, book\n launches\, and institutional programs.\n \n \n View All Events
