On Philippine Independence Day, I joined hosts Haydee Bernardo-Sampang and Pastor Eyriche Cortez on Oras na, Pilipinas!, the live program of 702 DZAS – FEBC Radio, for a conversation about the cultural dimensions of Filipino identity.
Oras na, Pilipinas! is one of the long-running live programs of 702 DZAS, a Manila AM station operated by FEBC (Far East Broadcasting Company) Philippines. The episode aired on June 12, 2026, the Philippines’ Independence Day, which commemorates the country’s 1898 declaration of independence from Spanish colonial rule.
Fittingly for the occasion, our conversation centered on the cultural dimensions of Filipino identity: the values, traits, and shared worldview that quietly shape how Filipinos relate to one another, communicate, and tell their stories, both at home and abroad.

For readers outside the Philippines, a bit of context helps. Haydee Bernardo-Sampang is a longtime radio host and program anchor at 702 DZAS, while Pastor Eyriche Cortez is a pastor who co-hosts the program, bringing a faith-based lens to its conversations. Together they anchor Oras na, Pilipinas!, a program that blends news, culture, and Christian perspective for its listeners.
702 DZAS is one of the oldest radio stations still operating in the Philippines, broadcasting on 702 kHz AM since 1948. It is owned and operated by FEBC (Far East Broadcasting Company) Philippines, a Christian media ministry whose motto is “Until All Have Heard.” FEBC broadcasts news, music, and inspirational programming across the Philippines and the wider Asia region, in addition to its radio programs simulcasting live on Facebook and YouTube as “FEBC Radyo TV.”
