On April 23, 2026, I joined Rian Mitchell Piamonte on Baka Naman Pwede?, a talk program on Radyo Katipunan 87.9 FM produced by the Institute of Philippine Culture at Ateneo de Manila University. The episode was titled Hintayin Ko Na Lang Ilagay ‘Yan sa Netflix! (loosely, “I’ll Just Wait for That to Be Put on Netflix”), and the hour looked at Filipino stories, who gets to tell them, and what happens when we wait for a big platform to decide they are worth telling.
The title captures the question we spent most of the hour on. Why do we sometimes treat a story as more legitimate only after it lands on Netflix or another global platform? I brought in ideas from my own work on culturally intelligent storytelling, including the C3 Bamboo Framework, and we talked about what it takes for a Filipino story to travel well without losing what makes it Filipino in the first place.
I currently teach part time in the Department of Communication at Ateneo de Manila University, which is also where the Institute of Philippine Culture is based. That is what brought Rian and me into the same conversation.

Who Are Radyo Katipunan and the Institute of Philippine Culture?
Radyo Katipunan 87.9 FM is a low-power campus radio station based at Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City, a university district in Metro Manila. It is owned and operated by the Jesuit Communications Foundation in coordination with the university, and it serves as a community station for the Ateneo campus and the surrounding Katipunan area.
Baka Naman Pwede? is produced by the Institute of Philippine Culture (IPC), a social science research center at Ateneo’s School of Social Sciences founded in 1960. My host that day, Rian Mitchell Piamonte, is a Research Assistant at the IPC.
