Cultural Intelligence at Cedars-Sinai: Decoding the Intersections

Ned Legaspi joined Cedars-Sinai healthcare and organizational leaders for a career development conversation on communication styles, generational shifts, and cultural intelligence in professional life.

This became a pivotal engagement in the development of the C3 Bamboo Framework. A conversation that began with storytelling widened into a larger inquiry about people, workplaces, care, and cross-cultural connection.

The Institution

A Conversation Inside a Leading Academic Medical Center

Cedars-Sinai is a nonprofit academic healthcare organization serving the diverse Los Angeles community and patients from around the world. Its work combines patient care, medical research, education, professional development, and community engagement.

The scale of the institution made the setting especially significant. Cedars-Sinai reports more than 4,000 nurses, more than 2,500 physicians on its medical staff, 915 licensed beds, and more than one million patient encounters annually.

Within that environment, the session brought cultural intelligence into the realities of care work, professional relationships, hierarchy, communication, and adaptation. Many participants were Filipino healthcare professionals, making the conversation both institutional and deeply personal.

The Session

Decoding the Intersections: Communication Styles, Generational Shifts, and the Context of Cultural Intelligence

The session explored how cultural expectations influence the way healthcare professionals communicate, respond to authority, interpret behavior, adapt across generations, and build trust in the workplace.

01

Communication Styles

Direct and indirect communication, high-context and low-context meaning, and the risks of assuming that shared language guarantees shared understanding.

02

Authority and Relationships

How power distance, hierarchy, respect, collectivism, and relationship expectations can shape teamwork and professional interaction.

03

Generational Shifts

How changing workplace values and expectations interact with culture, professional identity, migration, and the experience of adapting across contexts.

From Stories to People

One Question Changed the Direction of the Work

After the session, a Filipino nurse described the discussion as enlightening, then asked a practical question: How could these ideas be used in everyday professional life, during shifts, handovers, team discussions, and workplace conflict?

The question moved the conversation from cultural awareness to application. It showed that the same forces shaping stories also shaped the lives of professionals working across cultures. Communication style, hierarchy, identity, relationships, and trust were not abstract concepts. They were present in ordinary workplace encounters.

That realization widened the scope of the emerging C3 Bamboo Framework. Stories remained one lens, but they could no longer be the only lens. The framework also needed to examine the people who communicate, work, care, lead, adapt, and build relationships across cultural differences.

Culture shaped the setting. Communication affected the movement of meaning. Connection revealed the result. The emerging logic of C3
Culture The values, identities, expectations, and unspoken rules beneath the encounter.
Communication The ways meaning, authority, care, disagreement, and respect were expressed and interpreted.
Connection The trust, understanding, participation, and relationships that emerged from the exchange.

An Invitation That Opened a New Direction

The Cedars-Sinai engagement was made possible through the invitation and support of Janeth Zafra-Mauricio and the Fil-Am C.A.R.E.S. community.

The session opened a new field of inquiry for Ned's work: how culturally grounded frameworks could help professionals navigate communication, hierarchy, identity, care, and trust in institutions where people from different backgrounds work together every day.
